Porth Youth 17pts v Abercwmboi Youth 31pts - 22.08.2009
Porth Harlequins’ youth got their season off to an exciting start with a friendly match against Abercwmboi at Llwyncelyn field.
Both sides seemed nervous as the opening exchanges were filled with errors but it was Porth who took the lead through a well worked individual try by Porth second row Daniel Davies. After charging a kick down on the opposition 10 metre line he successfully kicked and chased the ball over the line which gave Porth a 7-0 lead with the conversion.
Both sides continued to play attacking rugby but it was Abercwmboi who were camped in the Porth half and eventually scored two well earned tries to make the score 12-7 in Abercwmboi’s favour. Porth then finished the half on top as they run in two tries to make the score 17-12 at half time.
The second half started much slower with both sides showing some excellent defending but it was Porth’s poor discipline which cost them as they played the majority of the second half with 14 men. Abercwmboi responded to the carding by scoring two tries to make the score 24-17 with 10 minutes to go.
A late breakaway try for Abercwmboi ended the game with the score 31-17 to Abercwmboi after a very high tempo match.
